knee pain

Knee pain is a common symptom of degenerative changes commonly referred to `wear and tear` in layman term to the knee joints. the lower end of femur (thigh) bone and upper end of tibia (leg) bone rest on each other to form the knee joint. there are cartilage at the ends o these bone to prevent them rubbing on each other due to sensitive nerves at the ends of these bones. with time or some health condition like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout etc. makes the cartilage to wear out and the sensitive bones ending will be rubbing over each other causing pain.

knee replacement surgery can be done in some instance if the pain can not be controlled with pain medication. physiotherapy is the common treatment option for knee pain.
the common exercises for knee pain are as follow
1: squatting. in standing position, holding the kitchen worktop, bend your knee downward and come back to standing position. repeat 10 times
2: in sitting position: straighten your knees and bend it to rest on the floor. repeat 10 times
3: cycling: riding a bicycle or a static cycle can also strengthen the lower limbs muscles
4: walking over longer distance is good
5: jogging over longer distance is good
6: going up and down the stairs is a good way to strengthen your lower limbs

mobility aids

have you had a fall in the past or difficulty picking up things or reaching your back when bathing? if so, then there aids that can make life easier for you. Across the elderly population, loss of balance, lack of confidence walking outdoor or going up and down the stairs etc. are major problems they experience. these problem limits their interaction with the outside world and make them prone to isolation. looking at your brand new jaguar car over the window without you being able to drive it due to inability to go over the front door steps or not being able to get outdoor on a sunny day or body builder carer strip washing you in bed instead of having Indian head massage on holiday cruises could break your heart.

mobility aids have being designed for solve different challenge being faced. I have seen electric scooter doing three point turn and parking in the bay manoeuvres with the riders enjoying their day out shopping, visiting pubs and having great day out. mobility aids should be embraced as it is vital to gaining ones independence back.

The commonly used mobility aids are:
1: walking sticks. these could be the adjustable aluminium type or the wooden stick given out in some hospital with physiotherapist turn to DIY specialist (i.e. cutting wooden sticks to patient height with metal saw). this can be used indoor and outdoor
2: wheeled zimmer frame: this is for indoor use only
3: wheeled gutter frame: this is also for indoor use and for patient needing more support from their fore arms to maintain standing position
4: three wheeled walker: this is for out door use and it is less bulky and can easily be folded in to the car boot.
5: four wheeled walker: this is for outdoor use and it has a seat on it. clients can seat on it while outdoor to rest for a while before continuing journey. it is a bit bulky than the three wheeled walker and can be folded into the car boot.
6: perching stool: this can be placed in the kitchen so that patient can seat and rest while preparing food.
7: shower chair: this is used in wet room or shower room and clients can seat on it while showering
8: bath lift: this lift patient into down the bath in long sitting position( back upright with knees straighten out) and up to the edge of the bath so that client can swing their legs over the bath.
9: bath seat: this is place in the bath so clients to seat in the bath while bathing
10: wheelchair: this is used to move within house or outdoor. there are two types. A) self propelling wheelchair in which the clients propel themselves using the metal rim close to the wheels and B) attendant propelling wheelchair in which the carer or family member pushes the wheelchair with the client sitting in it.
11: glide about commode: this is used to move patient short distance within home. the clients can use the potty in it and carer will empty it.
12: standing hoist: this is used to lift patient from sitting position to standing position during chair transfers or bed transfer. two handlers are required to use it.
13: full body hoist: these is used during bed transfer or chair transfers. two handlers are required also

the list of mobility aids goes on and on. these write up has shown that there are various mobility aids out there that can be used. physiotherapist or occupational therapist are trained to identify aids that are suitable for different clients needs. speak to your physio or OT regarding these aids.
